SPACi Day on the Grand
I have been spending a lot of time over the last week as the organiser of the Day on the Grand Event. Why am I a singer spending time working on an event that is all about piano playing? Well I often ask myself if this is the best use of my time also, but you know I believe that the more music making we have in our community the more it benefits us all. And I am not just talking about different instruments, but also different styles and settings.
As singers the piano is often a key element of our performing, and having an actual live person to play when we sing is amazing - yes yes I know we all have these fabulous backing tracks available to us now and I too love that having grown up in a time when that just wasn't a thing!! But nothing beats working with another musician to create music, or being able to accompany yourself.
So, be it piano, ukulele or some other instrument I am prepared to put the time in to build a local culture of musical performance and playing. I try to get along to as many local live performances as possible and support the huge effort it takes to organise these events.
Supporting other musicians supports us as musicians, it values the talent and hard work it takes to bring a performance to an audience. We all want our performances to be seen and listened to an appreciated, and we all want a place to be able to perform.
I want a community that has that so I am prepared to put some of my time and effort into making it happen and supporting it.
So next time you see a live music event advertised and you think - I'm not really into ... violins .... blues guitar .... I don't know who that is they are not a worldwide superstar (cos they are going to come to Stawell really soon ... not) Perhaps think, I'd like to see more live music in Stawell so I will get along to that and support it so that maybe next time it will be an instrument or style of music I like - or I could even talk to the organiser and see if they can put on that style of music?
I hope something here entertained or inspired you and that I will see you soon at a local event.
Meanwhile, keep singing.

Hi everyone,
Not specifically singing but I thought you might all like to know that there is an opportunity for people to play the grand piano at the Stawell Entertainment Centre (Town Hall).
SPACi are opening up the grand piano and you can book a 25 minute session where you can play and sing - all levels of ability are welcome - and people can come along to watch and support - but this is not a performance or concert - just an opportunity to play. Sessions are between 9am and 3pm on Sunday the 16th of May - tickets available through trybooking - only 12 tickets available for players so get your ticket please to make sure you have a time slot to play.
After the open day sessions there is a Piano Concert by Jack L Stacey from Ballarat. A wonderful opportunity to see and listen to the piano being played by a really wonderful pianist. He will be playing a variety of well known tunes so please purchase a ticket to that performance. Seats are limited.
Building up the local music scene is important - if we want audiences for our own performances we should also support other local performances - watch and learn and meet like minded people.
Keep having fun singing and I look forward to seeing many of you there on Sunday the 16th to enjoy the piano being played.
